Biography
Known as an expert flower-arranging teacher, Mahoko Dahte expanded her creative sphere to ceramics in 1992. She has since received numerous awards for her ceramic wall sculptures. Her most recent series of wall sculptures, called "Roji", consists of raku fired plaques, each depicting a Japanese tea garden in different seasons.
In addition to ceramic sculpture, Mahoko Dahte also creates Japanese tea utensils using the traditional method of wood firing in an anagama kiln. The handmade pottery is fired for four days, using only wood as fuel, producing the unique surface admired in the tea ceremony.
A teacher of Chanoyu (tea ceremony), Mahoko received her professional tea name Soho in 1995 and was awarded the Junkyoju (Associate Professor) Degree from the Urasenke School in 1997.
Mahoko Dahte was born and raised in Tokyo and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and son since 1989.
